A large and magnificent mid 18th century carved giltwood mirror in the manner of Matthias Lock retaining its original gilding and large rectangular mirror plate, the arched cresting with central pierced foliate scrolls surmounted by a large cluster of flowers and leaves flanked by further scrolls and hung with a garland of flowers, the pierced sides formed of massive scrolls with interspersed leaf carving and headed by chinoiserie masks, both wearing hats, a male to one side a female to the other, with a large berry motif at the base surrounded by asymmetric scrolls, foliage and flowers.
The size of this mirror is exceptional with the frame incorporating fanciful elements of the rococo combined with the two strong flanking chinoserie figures. It relates to various mirrors from Matthias Lock’s Six Sconces, second edition of 1768.
