A pair of George I gilt gesso tables attributed to John Belchier.
The attribution to John Belchier is based on stylistic similarities in construction and gesso cutting to the well-documented gesso furniture at Erddig in Wales, one of Belchier’s largest and best-known commissions, which cost £62 12s between 1722 and 1726, an enormous sum at the time.
Note: The tables retain virtually all the original gesso, with some refreshing to the gilding.
