Note: The mirror retains virtually all the original gilding. The mirror plate has been re-silvered at some stage, and the glass candle arms with their brass sockets are of later date.
The mirror is an excellent example of virtuoso carving during the height of English gesso work in the early 1700s. The firm of Moore & Gumley held the Royal Warrant jointly, with James Moore being responsible for furniture and John Gumley for mirrors.
The attribution to Gumley is based on stylistic grounds and the high quality of the workmanship. Mirrors signed by Gumley can be found in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle.
