Width: 24 in; 61 cm
Note: The mirror retains all the original decorated border glasses and the original re-silvered centre plates.
Queen Anne created sixteen peers during her reign and twelve of those were created in a single day. In the final years of her reign the War of Spanish Succession and Britain’s involvement had taken its toll on finances; Parliament was at a breaking point.
The Tories were losing power and the Whigs were gaining popularity. Robert Harley, Earl of Oxford asked Queen Anne to step in and create twelve new Tory peers in the House of Lords.
The opposition was appalled and nicknamed the new peers Harley's dozen. Out of the sixteen peers created by Queen Anne, only one name starts with a W. Thomas Hickman-Windsor, 1st Earl of Plymouth was created Baron Mountjoy in the peerage of Great Britain in 1712.
The blue of the border glasses symbolising not only the Tories but also loyalty to the crown. The gold symbolising power and success.
