A Chinese export reverse glass mirror painting of huge scale.

Note: The glass is retained in the original frame. The gilded surface to the frame is of later date. Three pieces of paper are pasted to the reverse of the painting. One handwritten in French, the second one typed and the English translation stating the history of ownership. The last one typed being an auction sale note in English.

Charles-Louis Clérisseau, was an internationally acclaimed prominent architect and draftsman of the 18th century. His knowledge about Roman architecture made him famous all over Europe and further afield, as far as Russia and the United States of America. He was appointed court architect to the Empress Catherine II of Russia and through Thomas Jefferson whilst being US Ambassador in France supplied the drawings for the Capitol as well as the White House. In England he worked for the Adam brothers introducing Neoclassicism.
