The needlework cover is worked in Gros point in shades of red blue and green on a light yellow ground and incorporates a petit point panel in the seat cushion depicting birds and a larger panel also worked in petit point depicting a dancing figure in fancy dress.
The back panel is inspired by a costume design by Jean Berain for the late 17th century opera Atys by Jean-Baptiste Lully. The dancing figure is the main character Atys. The Opera was one of Louis XIV favourites at the time.
