Note: The top is veneered with ten segments of figured fustic, crossbanded with gonçalo alves and banded with satinwood.

The cabinet-making workshop of Henry Hill of Marlborough (active between 1740 and 1778) is known for its superior furniture and use of fine exotic timbers, often in contrasting combinations. The ebonised edge of the table is a characteristic feature, and many pieces made by Hill feature an ebonised or part-ebonised edge moulding. The same moulding as well as the same inverted scroll legs to the base can be seen on a table sold at Bonhams in 2015.

Hill’s successful business supplied mainly landed families in England, including the Duke of Somerset for Maiden Bradley, Wiltshire, and the Methuen family at Corsham Court, also in Wiltshire.
