A George III brass mounted yew wood wine cistern by Ince & Mayhew.
Note: The removable brass liner is of later date.
One of Lord Kerry's best known commission is the ormolu mounted side board and pedestal urns now in the Lady Lever Gallery , Port Sunlight.
This wine cistern with its exceptional quality ormolu mounts was made en suite this celebrated dining room suite ordered by the Earl for his house on Portman Square. It was delivered with a second wine cistern that slightly differed by not being fitted with lead segmentations but was finished in polished wood and then received a removeable copper liner. Both cisterns were charged at £25 each.
The Christies sale catalogue of 1778 describes them in detail.
"A very neat Inlaid Cistern with partitions lined with lead & Wrought brass ornaments Gilt on Castors"
The other cistern being entered as follows:
"A neat inlaid Cistern with wrot brass Mouldings and ornaments Chased & lined with Copper".
