A pair of George III mahogany and giltwood commodes.
The commodes retain the original lion mask brass handles and giltwood trusses with some of the original gilding. The engraved ogee bracket feet are original. The use of giltwood trusses on furniture is unusual. More commonly trusses  are carved in mahogany or made in cast brass.  The extremely rare small size of the commodes suggests use as bedside commodes, however, it is also possible that they were intended as pier commodes for very small piers.
