A writing table or desk is an immensely personal item that usually gets the most use of any antique item within the home. It may often form the focal point of a room and should be of some importance. Such antique desks and writing tables have always had great distinction attached to them, none more so than in the 18th century when Thomas Chippendale, John Syers, William Vile, Holland & Son, Gillows of Lancaster and John McLean produced some of the finest examples of antique desks and writing tables.
