A George I gesso mirror.
Note: The mirror retains much of the original gilding. The shaped and bevelled mirror plate is an 18th century replacement.
The mirror is described in the Christie’s sale catalogue for 13 - 14 March 1947, lot 371, as ‘A mirror in gilt frame with corded and beaded borders, surmounted by shells, a canopy and foliage 4 ft high, 22 in wide’. It sold for 170 guineas.
