William and Mary furniture
The reign of William and Mary marked a turning point in the manufacture of furniture in England in the late 17th century. The new monarchy brought the Dutch taste in furniture with them and many stylistic points where embrassed by the English furniture manufacture. It was fundamentally sparked by the want for an increase in comfort. Chairs became padded and upholstered, the back splat curved to fit the back. The rear legs became splayed meaning the chairs were less likely to tip over. The introduction of marquetry meant a greater interest and decoration to the wood and the introduction of the cabriole leg meant the slow removal of the stretcher, a fundamental in English furniture construction to that date.
